Diocesan report cards will be sent home at the end of each 10-week period during the year. Progress Reports at Grades 3 – 6 level will be issued at mid quarter. Formal Parent-Teacher Conferences are held at the end of the First Quarter and as needed in the Third Quarter. Teacher or parent, as deemed necessary, can request additional conferences.

Time set aside each evening for reading is an invaluable enrichment for children and the key to learning. Class teachers may send home calendars to keep a monthly log of reading time.

The purpose of homework is to provide practice and to check understanding of concepts taught during classes. Though one overall grade per quarter may be given (and figured in the average), grades will consist mainly of class work, quizzes, projects, reports, oral presentations, and both formative and summative assessments. Unfinished homework must be completed at times designated by each individual teacher (after school or playtime so as not to consume class instruction time).

Generally class work to be completed during long absences for family vacations will not be given. At the teacher’s discretion some work may be assigned, but it must be understood that classroom instruction is essential to complete most work.

Points Regarding Grading Policy

  • The purpose of grading is to:

    1. Reflect student’s progress in learning goals and standards as set by the Diocese and NYState;

    2. Determine weaknesses/strengths as well as areas of growth attained/needed;

    3. Provide motivation for the student;

    4. Determine promotion or retention.

    5. Attendance, attitude, participation, and effort will not be considered in the class grade. But these factors, by their very nature, will directly affect their grades in class work, assessments, and performance. Also, there is a separate space on Diocesan report cards where attitude and behavior are noted.

    6. Scaffolding: During the four quarter assessments which comprise the year, it is understood that grades may go down because as students progress, concepts grasped in the simple stages may present difficulty as the complicated steps are introduced as the year progresses.

    7. In aligning grading to NYS Standards of 4 – 1, we use their definitions: Please note:

      Numeric grade Letter Number Definition

      90 – 100 A 4 Advanced: Exceeding expectations consistently.

      80 - 89 B 3 Proficient: Very satisfactory, meeting expectations here students should be.

      75 - 79 C 2 Progressing: succeeding in meeting many, but not all objectives;

      70 - 74 D 1 Proficient in some course objectives; but cannot go on to next grade;

      69 & below Unsatisfactory

      N Not evaluated at this time
