1 Cor. 13 ~ Christmas Version

Signs of the Times

Prayer For Advent

COME, LORD JESUS, GOD of all creation, send your Spirit upon us as we prepare for Christ. Keep us mindful that we are about to celebrate your coming among us in the person of Jesus.

May we be more aware of all the ways you come to us in our daily lives, especially through other people.

Strengthen our care and concern for others, especially those we find it difficult to love.

May we be grateful for all the blessings we have received and for every unfulfilled desire of our hearts. Amen.

Announcement!!!

The most High God requests the honor of your presence at the entry of His Son into the world. The unprecedented event will be followed by a joyous celebration in two locations: in heaven and on earth. The event will take place on December 25, and you are encouraged to spend the next four weeks in preparation for the festivities. We will reenact time-honored traditions. Gifts will be brought. Homes will be decorated. Special meals will be prepared.

Right now He is preparing special gifts of grace and blessings for us—Advent and Christmas presents to those who opens their hearts to Him.

Important Dates. . .

Our Christmas Program will be on Friday, December 16, at 7 p.m. All family, relatives, and friends are welcome. (DVD’s of the program will be available for $5 each.) Many thanks to Calvin/Judy Castine for taping the show, for featuring it on Hometown Cable TV—and for offering the DVD’s to us at this special rate.

We are looking for cookies for treats afterwards. Instead of a bake sale on Friday, we ask that each family bring in a plate of cookies. Please bring in on Friday morning so we know if we have enough!!!

The second Progress Report Period for Grades 3 – 6 ends on Friday, December 16. Progress reports will be sent home the following week.

On Thursday, December 22, Mike Lahar and his group will be having a Christmas sing-a-long at 10 a.m. in the gym. Christmas parties will be in the classrooms during the afternoon.

Christmas vacation begins on Friday, December 23 through January 2.

School resumes on Tuesday, January 3.

Our Family Mass will be on Christmas Eve @ 5 p.m. at St. Mary’s Church. Our children will be doing the readings—and the singing. Please do join us in prayer on this beautiful Feast of the Coming of God as Man.

Welcome, Bishop LaValley

Bishop Terry LaValley will be celebrating our First Friday Mass at 9 a.m. on January 6. Afterward, he will be visiting our school. It would be wonderful if as many as possible parents could attend Mass and/or drop into school afterwards.

I Corinthians 13—Christmas Version

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, Strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, But do not show love to my family, I am just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, Baking dozens of Christmas cookies, Preparing gourmet meals, And arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, But do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home, And give all that I have to charity, But do not show love to my family, It profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels And crocheted snowflakes, Attend a myriad of holiday parties, And sing in the choir’s cantata, But do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

Love stops the cooking to hug a child. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. Love is kind though harried and tired. Love doesn’t envy another’s home That has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way, But is thankful they are there to be in the way. Love doesn’t give only to those able to give in return, But rejoices in giving to those who can’t. Love bears all things, Believes all things, Hopes all things, Endures all things. Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, Golf clubs will rust, But giving the gift of love will endure. You can give without loving. But you cannot love without giving.
Love is the key to peace, joy, and happiness. Let love reign in your hearts.

To Mobil Corporation through Church Oil Co, Inc. in Plattsburgh for a grant of $500 for math and science. We have purchased microscopes, Cross Section Plant Cells, balance scales and geometric shapes, a Work and Simple Machines activity set, student thermometers and magnifiers, and electricity kits—great additions to our science program.

To all those who bought and sold cookie dough, etc. to those who helped us sort, and to Karen Disch who chaired the fundraiser. Our profit was $2,259.89.

To all those who sold and bought Christmas wreaths and to Audrey LaClair who did such a beautiful job making the wreaths. A special thanks to Mona Reed who sold about 50 wreaths!! Our profit was $584

To all those who did Christmas Shoeboxes for the poor children in our world. We gave in 39 shoeboxes to the collection center, giving us a total of nearly 500 since we started doing this in 2002. The Assembly of God Church in Plattsburgh (the collection center for the surrounding area) collected 6,455 this year (above last year, 5094).

To those who purchased items from School Mate and to Mrs. Shivokevich for running this fund raiser.

To Celeste Timmons, Laura Trahan, and Donna Gero for running a wonderful Craft Fair on November 19 and for all those who helped out. Our profit was $1,461.62.

To Sue Duffy and Autumn Garrow who are working with our basketball team and to our children who are participating—learning the rules, the plays, and enjoying lifetime sports.

To Eric Dutil, Jean Jesberger and all those who are chairing and working at our dances. Our income this year to as of November 30 is $1,813.38

To Sonia Shivokevich for again doing our Christmas Program—she writes, directs, produces, choreographs, and does costumes for—this outstanding program each year.

Financially Speaking. . .

As of November 30, 2011:

  • Expenses have been $ 180,785.64

  • Income has been 156,949.27

  • Parish Subsidy 23,836.37

As of October 31, the parish subsidy had risen to $61,961 (the parish can give us only $35,000 a year). November is a “happy month” as we received the first half of UPK funding ($34,831) and half of the Catholic School Support from the Diocese ($28,500).

Last year, after “happy” November, the parish subsidy was only $13,712—as you can see from the above figures, we are already we are $10,000 behind last year. AND December, January, and February are very “dry and difficult” months financially. Most of our expenses are salaries and they cannot be “put on hold.” For those who have received letters regarding back tuition, please understand why we must require that this be paid as soon as possible.
